“Part of his shtick was that he got me to feel like I was a part of it,” she said. “Then he told me that if I told anyone it would hurt many people, especially my parents. So I took responsibility for keeping the secret and protecting my parents. I took responsibility for protecting him too.”
She also didn’t think anyone would believe her.
“You know as a child that this person is an outstanding member of the community. They’re leaders in the church. They’re respected leaders in the community,” she said. “Do you think anyone is going to believe the word of a child over that of a respected adult?”
